Butter Garlic Shrimp With Sprite is a mouthwatering dish that has found its way into seafood lovers around the world. It is a perfect combination of rich, garlicky, creamy, and buttery sauce paired with succulent shrimp complemented by the bright, zesty notes of Sprite.

If want to make a flavorful and delicious shrimp recipe, this buttered shrimp dish is the best recommendation. You will need just minimal ingredients and the result is an irresistible main dish to please your family and friends.

Adding Sprite to your butter shrimp might sound unconventional, but it's a culinary innovation that has gained popularity in recent years. The carbonation and citrusy notes of Sprite add a refreshing twist to the richness of the butter sauce. The soda enhances the flavor and adds a delightful twist that lightens up the dish, making it perfect for any occasion.

This dish is inspired by the Filipino shrimp recipe called Halabos na Hipon which uses lemon-lime-flavored soda with butter and garlic. In the Philippines, we have tons of seafood choices but one of the most popular all year around is shrimp. But we never run out of shrimp recipe and we can't get enough of it.

    Ingredients

For the exact and full measurement of the ingredients and instructions, check the recipe card below. You can also print to make a copy.

Photo of ingredients for the shrimp recipe.
    • Shrimp - You need whole shrimp. Don't remove the head as it adds briny flavors that enhance the dish. If you are not a fan of shrimp heads, you can use shrimps without the heads and/or tails too.
    • Butter - It gives buttery and rich flavors.
    • Garlic - This gives aromatic flavor.
    • Sprite - Flavor enhancer that adds sweetness and tanginess. You can also use different types of soda such as Mountain Dew, 7up, and ginger ale, or any lemon-lime soda.
    • Salt and Pepper - to adjust the taste.

    Instructions

Cooking this delicious dish is so easy. It takes about 12 minutes from start to finish. I am sure, you will going to make this over and over again.

Cooking onion and garlic in melted butter.

Step 1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt your butter. Then add the minced garlic and chopped onion and cook until translucent. Be sure to use medium heat to avoid burning the butter.

Simmering the sprite in a skillet.

Step 2. Pour the sprite. Bring it to a gentle boil, for about 5 minutes.

Adding the shrimp to the skillet.

Step 3. Add your shrimp, salt and pepper. Cook them until the shrimp turns into orange color. It only requires a few minutes to cook the shrimp. Be sure to keep an eye on it.

Step 4. Sprinkle chopped green onions or cilantro for garnish. Ready to serve and enjoy your buttered garlic shrimp with Sprite!

    Variations

    • Spicy - Add chili pepper flakes or sriracha to the dish to imbue heat into the dish or jalapeno peppers.
    • Oyster sauce - Adding oyster sauce can add umami flavor. It will turn this dish into sweet and savory.
    • Sweeter - Add ketchup for a good balance of sweet and tangy with a bright color to the dish.
    • Vegetables - You can add bell pepper, broccoli, or asparagus to this dish to add more color and nutrients to the dish.

    Storage and Reheating Tips

Storage - Store the leftovers after it is cool in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Cooked seafood like shrimp is good to consume for up to 3 days if stored properly in the refrigerator.

Reheating - To reheat this garlic-buttered shrimp leftover, transfer it into a saucepan. Reheat over medium heat until warm thoroughly. Serve in a plate with your favorite side dish.

    Top Tip

    • Cook the shrimp with shells and head intact for a more flavorful dish. I have tried both with and without a head but the head and shells add a rich and robust flavor that elevates this buttered shrimp.
    • Shrimp cooks very fast. They are completely cooked once they change to an opaque color. Be sure to cook it for just a few minutes. Overcooked shrimp are chewy and dry.
    • The ideal shrimp size to make this recipe is the large-sized shrimps (21-25 count).

    Questions and Answers

Is it possible to use a non-carbonated beverage in place of Sprite?

While Sprite adds a fizzy flavor due to carbonation, you can use a non-carbonated beverage or even bone broth as a substitute.

Shrimp cooks quickly and can become tough if overcooked. It's best to keep an eye on them while cooking. They are ready once they turn pink and then bright orange.
